Yoga means union of individual consciousness (a being) with supreme consciousness (God). There are many definitions of yoga. Maharishi Patanjali says, “Yoga is seizure of all mental modifications”. Lord Krishna States in Gita “Evenness of mind is called Yoga”. He also says, “Yoga is skill in action”. The true meaning of the quotes can only be understood after some amount of spiritual progress. Yoga is just not sitting in postures and controlling the breath as understood by most of the people in the present times. Physical Yoga Asana and Pranayama etc are just a small part of the complete yoga process. There are many limbs of yogic practices. The main branches of yoga are:
(a) Janana yoga (yoga of knowledge).
(b) Karam yoga (yoga of action).
(c) Bhakti yoga (yoga of devotion).
All other names and types of Yoga’s, propounded by ancient and modern sages are minor deviations or combination of the aforesaid (branches) of Yoga. The branches of yoga are not being discussed in detail, however a brief sketch of each of them is given in the succeeding paragraphs.
The yogic practices are peculiar to each type of yoga. The Guru according to the temperament of the aspirant suggests the yogic practices, which one has to perform. The masses are not aware of this aspect. This is a very important aspect, one cannot attain success in practices which are contrary to ones psyche or mental make up. It is the Guru alone who has the insight of all the capabilities of his devotee or disciple and accordingly he initiates his pupil.
