What is Love?

Love is the most sublime and ecstatic feeling.    The mother’s love for the child is probably the highest form of expression of love in the animal kingdom.   We all claim to love something or the other in our life.   It could be a being or God; it could also be a material object.    The mind gives the feeling, the emotion of attachment or attraction we call this love.   Based on these feelings the mind may even get infatuated.    Is all this love? Most would say yes, but the answer is no.

One of the main characteristics of the mind is attachment and aversion.   We may go to a slight extreme and say it also loves and hates.    Since, mind is unstable it may love an object for some time and hate it later.    The mind always determines through the discriminative intellect.   The intellect is inherent in the mind, and hence every thing for the mind becomes conditional.  The condition what the mind considers favorable or unfavorable determines its attachment or aversion. But think, can love be such a cheap feeling that you love a being today and hate him tomorrow because it does not tow your line of thinking or doesn’t perform actions according to your desire.    This is exactly what happens in almost all cases, we love today, get married tomorrow, and divorce the day after.  This cannot be taken literally.   We like a person for some time and change the opinion after a while.    Mind is ever changing, as it functions upon likes and dislikes, merit and demerit.   Hence, the opinion about anybody is subject to change over a period of time according to attitude and behavior.

Now, imagine the Creator, who has created the entire Cosmos and all the living and non-living beings.    He is Omnipresent in those beings as their very Soul; he loves each and every being equally as his very self.  His feeling of love is unchangeable towards all beings he loves them equally.  One can feel his love; in some advanced meditations, the feeling is so ecstatic and euphoric that it is beyond any description.   Our so-called emotional outburst about love for someone is not even a fraction of that feeling.    The Lord has stated many times that I am at the beck and call of my devotee.   One has got to know this love of God by making Him ones ideal and invoking his presence to get the true feeling of love.     The process of getting, the feel of love of God and knowing the Self is called Yoga.    It is through the process of Yoga one learns the true knowledge and experiences true love.    One has to learn to love every thing God has created to be able to experience true love.
