Purpose of Life
In the evolutionary process, we have been through all possible lower and maybe upper forms of life like plants, insects, animals, demi-gods etc. In the lower forms of life, one had limited intelligence and limited activity. As humans we have a very wide scope of activity and adequate intelligence to understand the divine play and means to know the truth. A birth of a human is rare considering eons of other living beings existing in the cosmos. The scriptures reveal that it is easy to realize the Self or Absolute as a human being but extremely difficult for other species including demi-gods.
Since the human has been created with all the facilities of intelligence, understanding and application of intelligence through the body, mind and senses, the only conceivable purpose of this is God realization, not indulgences. Our animal instincts are very strong since we have been animals in our previous incarnations. Hence, there is a natural tendency in humans to repeat what it did as animals. That is, eat, sleep, procreate and shed the body at the appointed time. One has to realize that one is no more an animal and has to become a human. One has to develop good virtues and habits. One has to learn to live a pure and humble life. Gradually the human has to become Divine. To become Divine is the birthright of all beings, it is the essential nature of all beings. On account of the Lord’s Play we forget our true-self and get involved with the objects around us and get enmeshed in indulgent activities seeking pleasure and happiness, which is not found. The transitory elation of indulgence and further desire for the similar activity keeps one away from the reality, as the mind keeps going back, again and again into the same indulgent factors and keeps one away from the real purpose of life. Even when viewed optimistically all that appears as pleasure at a particular moment becomes a source of anxiety or pain at another time. One considers this relatively real world to be true and suffers the consequences of ignorance birth after birth.
Yes, the purpose of life as a human is to realize ones true nature and the Self. Ones true nature is Bliss. God is Eternal and present within each and every being, He is beyond Space and Time, He is the cause of all-living and non-living beings, and the entire universe vibrates due to his power and desire. One has to realize this to attain permanent happiness, this knowledge of the Absolute leads to enlightenment or nirvana. God-realization does not imply going to the woods and practicing austerities. Just reading Holy Scriptures does not help in reaching the state of Super-Consciousness. Academic realization is of no value. Self-realization involves spiritual practices, which are very secular in nature, any one, of any faith, or religion can easily perform these practices. This realization implies knowing the truth that one is eternal Blissful Self not what one had thought earlier. Most people think that God realization involves becoming a monk or taking to the forest. Anyone can realize The Self. It requires honesty, more hard work for the betterment of the society and the world. It means a higher understanding, an insight into divine play and development of universal love. It involves serving ones Guru, reading scriptures, practicing yoga, meditation and serving the poor and the down trodden. One has to smilingly take on additional responsibilities and duties. One has to work selflessly. Remember, God loves sacrifice, unless one is prepared to sacrifice, ones mind will not purify. Without purification of the mind divine knowledge will not manifest. Ones essential nature is divine, one has to endeavor hard to establish oneself back into ones true nature.
Truth Bliss Absolute is the nature of each and every being. On account of ignorance one keeps identifying with the body and takes on the doer ship of action on account of ego thereby causing further complications for one’s self. Just sit for a day or two and ask your self, do I have an aim in life? Yes, you may have an aim of becoming the President or a King whatever it maybe. Okay, you become one. Now what happens, nothing lasts here, even if one becomes a king the body has to be shed at the appointed hour. What did you do as a human to acquire the knowledge of the Reality or improve your further birth? What happens now? Possibly such in depth questions makes one realize that the purpose of human birth is much different than it appears to be.
