Japa Yoga

Japa means recitation.    The Japa are of two kinds; written Japa and Japa done by recitation of the mantra.    Japa facilitates concentration, and it is yet another means of   Pratyahara, and Dharna.     The mystical mantra if recited gives an added benefit and helps in purifying the mind.    It is also capable of bestowing siddhis (Extra sensory perceptions) to the performer of the Japa.    Japa can give God vision to the performer.

Mantra is a mystical formula of words; the Guru gives this to the disciple when the Guru feels that the disciple is now ripe for higher revelations of knowledge.    However one can do the Japa of the Ista mantra till such time one is initiated into a Guru mantra.   Mantra Japa can be done by chanting the mantra loudly, or repeating it silently moving the lips, or doing it in the mind. Mantra Japa done by moving the lips is 100 times more powerful than the Japa done loudly.    The Japa done silently in the mind is 1000 times more effective than the Japa performed by moving the lips.    To begin with one can start with audible recitations and gradually in due course of time start silent mental Japa.

Taking a mantra from a book and doing its Japa may not yield desired results.     Except some Vedic Mantras, Lord Shiva has sealed all other mantras.    They have to taken from a Guru who gives the unsealed mantra to the disciple.    Mantras are not ordinary formula of words made by yogis or priests, the mantra is revealed to a sage in state of meditation by the Deity.    Hence there is lots of secrecy regarding this aspect.   One must never divulge ones Mantra to any one, it should be a total secret.

The following Mantras can be used for the purpose of Japa before getting the Guru mantra:

(a)    Om Namah Shivaya.

(b)   Om Namo Bhagvate Vasudevaya.

(c)    Om Ganpatya Namah.

(d)   Om Mahalakshmi Namah.

(e)    Om Saraswatiye Namah.

(f)     Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare.

(g)    Om Shri Hanumatye Namah.

One must buy a rosary of 108 beads for performance of Japa.   Vishnu and Narayana mantras can be done on basil rosary, Shiva Mantras on Rudrakash rosary.   Ganesha mantras are not to be recited on Basil rosary; one may use a Rudrakash rosary or a rosary made of sandalwood.    Mahalakshmi Mantra can be done either on rosary made of Lotus seeds or basil.     One must learn how to use the rosary.
