Meditation cannot be really defined in a sentence or a paragraph. Various seers and sages have defined meditation in different ways with similar themes. Meditation is a process wherein the mind is focused on a singular object of realization or concentration with a particular objective in mind. The thoughts are made to flow in a continuous process towards the object of meditation. Also, it is a process by which one transcends the present state of consciousness and enters the higher states of awareness. Removing mind from all objects is meditation. Many people state that they meditated for a long time without realizing that they were actually just concentrating. Meditation happens on its own, from the process of concentration and the method applied, one gradually gets into meditation. It is God’s grace. One cannot force ones-self into meditation, it will not happen.
Meditation happens if the mind is not distracted. In the beginning one practices Pratyahara and battles to keep the mind focused. The mind is like a crystal it assumes the color of the object it is placed with. A disturbed or tired mind and body cannot meditate; the mind will be restless and keep oscillating. Calm the mind before meditation otherwise the effort will prove to be futile.
The following difficulties may be experienced during meditation:
(a) Sleep. Sleep can overcome the mind during meditation. A few pranayama will drive the sleep away.
(b) Heaviness in body and mind. This happens due to overloading the stomach; one must eat early and not fill the belly.
(c) Dullness or Lethargy. Mind may get bored and start daydreaming. Keep the interest alive in the meditations.
(d) Wandering of the mind. Be watchful, the mind has a tendency to wander into past experiences etc. Just watch the mind and bring it back to the object of meditation.
Meditation is the most beneficial human effort since it involves going back to the original state of harmony or bliss. Many modern Wizards who do not accept this practice and term this process as self-hypnosis. There is an Ocean and countless waves in it; each wave has been hypnotized into a name and form. There is one God and we are a part of the same God, by meditation we dehypnotise ourselves from this tiny wave and become the Ocean again.
Any one of any faith or religion can practice meditation. One is at liberty to meditate as to what one considers is God. God is one; all that we see is his manifestation. Since there is lack of understanding of this aspect in many minds it is thought that meditation is only a part of the Hindu or Buddhist or Jain culture. Such views are biased and totally unfounded. One can meditate upon any chosen Ideal Krishna, Christ, Buddha, Guru Nanak or any manifested or unmanifested form one considers God.
A word of caution to all beginners, one can certainly start meditation on one own self to begin with, but before you decide to meditate you must know what you are aiming at. If it is for simple relaxation just meditate for ten minutes or so it will be ok. If one has decided to get into higher worlds of mind and consciousness certainly start your practices but no tangible headway is likely be made as meditations do not bear fruit towards higher realizations till such time initiation into this takes place by the adept Guru in some form or the other. Usually one can see blue or yellow colored lights etc and the experiences stop. No further progress is made. Also those who have been initiated must first aim at purification of mind and then increase the duration of the practices. Meditation gives added energy, if one starts increasing the duration without of ones own accord without first purifying of the mind one can more materially inclined, the sexual appetite may abnormally increase, this can cause harm to the aspirant and others. Hence purity in thought and deed and diet is mandatory for those who want to levitate themselves.
Many a modern Guru with flourishing shops have not realized the highest and initiate people into meditation for obvious reasons. They do not ensure proper purity and disciplines for cleanliness of mind they cause harm to the subject and themselves. The highest goal cannot be achieved by erratic means and wrong approach. One has to proceed step by step in a very patient manner. This is not an academic study it is a journey towards realization of the Supreme Consciousness. No hasty action is likely to pay dividends in any of spiritual disciplines, especially meditation.
